Subject: What does death mean to an atheist?
Author: pennysworthofdimes

Comment: "what happens to your essence?" I'm not sure what you mean by "essence," but I'll go with the idea that you mean "consciousness." And what happens is that it ceases to exist. I will have as much awareness of myself and my surroundings as I did before I was conceived. "how can you believe it just goes to blackness." It's even less than that. Nothingness isn't even able to wonder about the nothingness. And if you're pondering alternatives, how can you believe in eternal damnation? THAT is something I can't believe in. "how can you believe insomething so empty and without hope ." You're the one saying it's without hope, not me. You might feel that without an eternal existence there's no reason for you to exist at all, but I find that rather shallow. "what is the point if your right?" The point is that you have this life to make of it what you will. You can choose to make it good, you can choose to gamble it on another one that nobody has reported back from, or you can just get by. If you're really interested in making a permanent mark, you can be a Newton, Einstein, Darwin, Jefferson, or even William the conqueror.
